Adkins was asked about the possibility of Billy Sharp returning.
He replied with "I had him at Scunthorpe and then at Southampton just in time to fire us into the Premier League. At the moment he is a Leeds United player"

Is he going to be a 20 goal a year striker because that is what we need (apart from wingers who can beat the first defender when they cross the ball and two good centre backs and maybe a decent midfield playmaker). We were about 20 points off automatic promotion last season and at the moment we are likely to be further back unless we strengthen.

Andy Williams of Swindon (22 goals last season) was set to sign for is just before Clough was sacked. Deal now off.
So just when Clough was about to get the "20 goal striker" everyone's been harping on about getting they decide to let him go.

Williams scored 22 for an attacking, forward-thinking team, with a striking partner and advanced midfielders, not a 1 upfront crab-football side who often went entire games with no attempt on goal. Get the manager right, and let him bring his own 20-goal striker in, which could yet be Williams.

that is the reason why derby sacked him, at least shelf utd saw it before it was too late next season. Nigel Clough is a very nice guy but not a patch on his fathers managerial skills. Its ok playing nice passing football but if its not going forward it is a boring waste of time and might as well turn to long ball at least you see plenty of attempts at goal.

Also, bit of a side note: Doyle has told how he would hate to leave having not gained promotion. Probably reading too much into it but he's 33 and his contract is up at the end of the year so maybe thinking about moving on or retiring?

At Chesterfield Doyle has spent much of the time up there by himself. Just like Clough Cook likes to play with 1 up front so Doyle seems like an obvious choice seeing as he's already proved that he can lead the line by himself and score goals doing it

He's worth it. Spent the last 6 months watching him play and his attitude around the club is fantastic. Would definitely pass Cloughy's "would he fit in" test.

Doyle would definitely suit our style of play.
Doubt Paul Cook would want to lose him though so the offer would have to be a massive one I'm guessing. Doesn't seem like Doyle is eager to move though.

It is true that Chesterfield went in for Higdon in the summer. I'll have to find out if there's any truth to the Doyle to United rumours although I won't be able to relay any of the information (people who claim to be in a privileged position usually aren't because if they were they wouldn't be allowed to disclose anything. I know I'd get fired if I did that)
